How a bill becomes a law

Executive (PM and Cabinet): The Executive Government puts forward potential laws called bills and introduce them, during a meeting with the Prime minister and senior ministers (Cabinet). This group is made up of the PM and the Cabinet which are ministers decided by the PM to join the front bench. Other politicians can introduce bills, these are called private members bills. Because they don’t have majority seats in the H.O.Rs, they don’t often get paused. The Cabinet are in charge of ideas and plans of the Government. They meet regularly to discuss problem that affect Australia. They also put laws into action by using cops and through the government departments.

Parliment (House of representatives and Senate): Bills are introduced to the H.O.R for debate. MPs make speeches explaining why the agree or disagree with the bill. The H.O.R might choose to send a bill to a committee to learn about. This committee seeks information about the bill and talk to MPs of the community, experts and interest groups to learn more about it. The committee writes and report and presents it to the H.O.R. The MPs use this evidence from the investigation to decide whether they support the idea or not. They then detail the bill and debate and vote on changes. Amendments are suggested. If the bill is approved, it is sent off to the senate. The same process is done in the senate.

Governer general: When these bills are passed through Parliament, they get checked and approved by the Governor – General, if they are satisfied that the bill has passed through the senate and the H.O.R. The king chooses the new Governor – General, with the advice of the PM.

Departments: Bills are administered by the Government Department that therefore are laws or Acts of Parliament. When the bill becomes a law, the responsible minister much put the new law into action. They must make sure that everyone knows about the new law and update the electoral roll, taking any actions that are necessary. If the minister ever thinks that the law needs to be changed again, they can and may bring the new idea to the Parliament as a new and different bill.
